Ownership Decisions Deserve to Be Studied as Decisions

Independent research on ownership decisions, founder behavior, enterprise development, business transitions, and generational wealth.

Ownership Decisions Deserve to Be Studied as Decisions

The Generational Wealth Institute conducts independent research on the consequential decisions that shape ownership, enterprise development, organizational continuity, business transitions, and long-term wealth outcomes.

Our research examines how founder-owners make decisions when control, capital exposure, identity, organizational dependence, stakeholder relationships, and future ownership options are simultaneously at stake. We develop theory, evidence, frameworks, and decision tools intended to improve how these choices are understood and evaluated.

Our Research Domains

Ownership Decisions

We study high-consequence choices that alter control, capital exposure, founder dependence, succession, governance, professionalization, and future ownership paths.

Research & Frameworks

We develop conceptual models, empirical research, decision frameworks, working papers, and institutional tools for understanding consequential ownership choices.

Generational Wealth & Enterprise

We examine how ownership, enterprise value, continuity, transferability, governance, and stewardship shape the creation and preservation of value across generations.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN DEVELOPMENT

Ownership Decisions as High-Consequence Strategic Choice

Toward a Behavioral Theory of Founder-Owner Decision-Making

Paschal Ukwu
August 2026 · Version 1.0 · Working Paper

This conceptual paper develops ownership decisions as a distinct class of high-consequence strategic choice and proposes a behavioral theory of founder-owner decision-making involving control, capital exposure, founder dependence, strategic optionality, and organizational transition.

Ownership Decision Registry™

The Ownership Decision Registry™ is the Generational Wealth Institute’s longitudinal research initiative examining consequential decisions made by business owners and founder-operators.

The Registry is designed to document how owners interpret uncertainty, evaluate alternatives, manage control, navigate founder dependence, respond to stakeholder pressures, and make decisions that can materially reshape the future of the enterprises they built.

Through structured decision-episode research and longitudinal follow-up, the Registry is intended to generate original evidence on how ownership decisions are made, how they evolve over time, and which factors shape decision quality and long-term ownership outcomes.
