Why Study Ownership Decisions?
Business ownership is often studied through observable outcomes: growth, succession, sale, closure, governance change, or transfer. Yet those outcomes are preceded by consequential decisions made under uncertainty by owners whose capital, control, identity, livelihood, relationships, and organizational roles may be concentrated in the same enterprise.
The Ownership Decision Registry™ was established to study those decisions closer to the point at which they are being considered and made. Rather than examining only what ultimately happened to a business, the Registry seeks to understand what owners decided, what alternatives they perceived, what evidence they considered, what constraints they faced, and how their decisions evolved over time.
What We Study
Ownership and Control
sale, retention, ownership restructuring, governance, control rights
Organizational Independence
founder dependence, professionalization, delegation, management systems
Continuity and Transition
succession, transferability, continuity, exit, generational transfer
Enterprise Development
acquisition, expansion, strategic investment, structural change
This is better intellectually than an undifferentiated list.
It also begins showing how GWI’s research domains connect.
The Ownership Decision Episode
The Registry does not treat the founder or the firm as the only unit of interest. A central unit of analysis is the ownership decision episode: a consequential period during which an owner recognizes a decision, interprets alternatives, evaluates evidence and constraints, engages relevant stakeholders, takes or delays action, and subsequently experiences the evolution of that choice.

The Registry is designed to follow consequential ownership decisions through time rather than relying exclusively on retrospective accounts after outcomes are known. Research methods and analytical approaches may evolve as the program develops and will be documented transparently in accordance with GWI’s Research Methodology standards.
2026 Founding Cohort
The 2026 Founding Cohort represents the initial field-research phase of the Ownership Decision Registry™. GWI is currently recruiting and interviewing founder-owners and owner-operators whose experiences can help illuminate how consequential ownership decisions develop in practice.
No empirical findings from the Founding Cohort are currently being claimed. Findings will be published only after sufficient evidence has been collected, analyzed, and evaluated in accordance with the Institute’s research standards.
From Research to Institutional Knowledge
Working Papers
Theory, conceptual development, and research in progress.
Research Reports
Substantive institutional analyses and empirical research outputs.
Research Briefs
Accessible interpretation of significant questions or findings.
Framework Development
Evidence-informed decision frameworks and institutional tools.
Benchmarks and Data
Where evidence and governance permit, aggregated findings, benchmarks, research tables, and appropriately governed datasets.
Findings are not published simply because data have been collected. Publication depends on the maturity of the evidence and the methodological, ethical, and legal appropriateness of making the material public.
That connects beautifully to the principle we already articulated publicly.
Research Status
The Ownership Decision Registry™ is an active research initiative of the Generational Wealth Institute. The 2026 Founding Cohort is currently in the field-research stage.
Research Participation
GWI periodically invites founder-owners and owner-operators to participate in Registry research. Participation opportunities, eligibility information, and research contact details are published separately when recruitment is open.
Learn About Research Participation
That would eventually lead to a dedicated participant recruitment page rather than mixing consent/research information into the institutional overview.
We don’t need to build that right now unless it becomes operationally necessary.
